The New Build I feel I should get up and toddle down to see the new build overlooking the town. I joined the Action Group, made my objections, made little difference to the ultimate erections— neat little town houses blocking the view, semis with garages two by two. Of course, we were all worried at first, falling house values, traffic and dust, noise and builders showing their bums, scaring the children and menacing mums. But we all got used to the sound of the drill, the JCB and the dozer’s backfill. Now all is calm again down our road, I’ve even seen the odd squirrel and toad. Why all the fuss and the anxious emails? The garden’s still slimy with slugs and snails. Families have moved in, there’s more life here now, and they got around Planning any old how. So why all the protest, questionnaires, angst? We’re moving next week to somewhere in France.
Look out for more of Aldilà tomorrow…
