Just read an article about Judy Blume who went through 20 drafts of her novel Summer Sisters. Her advice – don’t let anyone discourage you.
‘I just knew that I had really good characters and that I had to stick with them and throw away the drafts that didn’t work. I loved them. I cared about them. I was involved with them and I believed in them. I had to find a way to do it.’

Ginger Jack, the cat, bounds in as tart as marmalade,
plays with a strip of fur the length of a rat.
Milo, the golden retriever lies his old round head
beneath my loving stroke. Each particular
of these animals I adore. In the garden. a Belgian hare,
the colour of beach trees, pads softly in his cage.
Each weekend, or most, I lift him from his run
to let him roam the garden. He nuzzles close
with what I imagine to be affection.

To write a diary every day is like returning to one’s own vomit.
