I saw Brendan Cleary today. Looking very well with a huge head of hair and an Old Testament beard. He says he once met the Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, after a reading Brendan gave in Birmingham.
Yevtushenko came up to him afterwards dressed in a huge flowing kaftan and introduced himself with one word, ‘Y’.
‘That was good,’ Y said.
